Acadi meeting summary January 2011

February 9, 2011

Acadi members spent a useful and interesting day at the meeting hosted by the University of Birmingham. There was a full agenda but there was time to visit the fascinating Barber Institute Gallery at lunchtime. Many thanks to Maria and Aileen for their hospitality.

Slide disposal or relocation The original DACS licence will be checked for conditions relating to this subject. If clarification can be found it will be posted on this blog for reference.

UUK/CLA licence
Negotiations have begun for a new licence (August 2011) with surveys circulated by both organisations. Using the existing licence for images is unworkable – a radical change is needed. It was suggested that individual institutions, or ACADI as a group should make representations directly to the newly appointed CLA HE executive.

DACS digital image licence
Reports from members on the ongoing ACADI campaign for a digital image licence for educational use. UUK (Universities UK) and the LISCOPYSEEK list have been lobbied. The ACADI wishlist for a digital image licence will be posted on the blog.

Image quality in subscription image databases for art and design
Some low-resolution images have resulted in negative feedback from academics. This becomes apparent when the images are projected. It was decided to raise the problem again with the suppliers; providing examples of “good” and “bad” images.

The future of slide collections
It was agreed that we are now at a “crunch point” Discussion covered planning ahead, weeding strategies, the archival value of slide collections and their record of the “history of the history of art”

The changing role of the librarian in visual resources
New responsibilities include  subscription database assessment, image management software implementation and involvement with research repositories and student archives. Teaching/instructional duties are now common; inductions, seminars, workshops, online tutorials, webpage creation and research theory.

Grant awarded
ACADI members Vicky Brown and Catherine Worrall have been successful in their bid for the ARLIS ProQuest Research Award. Their research will investigate the take-up of electronic resources in education, with a comparison between UK and USA. They will contact individual members of the VRA (Visual Resources Association) and ACADI for their views.

Moving images & sound websites Jenny Godfrey’s list of recommended websites will form the basis of a new information page on this blog.
